Hebrews 12:1-13 Bible Study Questions

  1. What types of hindrances and sins can cause a believer to become weary in the race of life?
  2. Laying aside every hindrance and sin to run the race with endurance is achieved by what means/strategies?
  3. Why does keeping our eyes on Jesus help us to run the race the lies before us? (Read Numbers 21:4-9; John 3:14-16 for additional insight)
  4. How is Jesus both the source and perfecter of our faith?
  5. What hostility did Jesus endure from others and how did he endure it?
  6. How does considering what and how Jesus endured help us in circumstances when we feel weary or defeated?
  7. The greek word for discipline as it is used in this passage is “paideias” Use blue letter bible or a bible dictionary and record the definition of the word. How does this definition give you a better understanding of Hebrews 12:5-6?
  8. Read Proverbs 3:11-12 alongside Hebrews 12:5-10. The Lord disciplines the ones he loves for what reason/s?
  9. What peaceful fruit of righteousness is experienced when a person has willingly accepted training and discipline from the Lord? 
  10. What does “strengthening your tired hands and weakened knees” require from those called to run the race in Christ?

Application:

  1. What sin or hindrance is Jesus calling me to lay aside in my life right now? How will Jesus help me do this?
  2. Is there anyone in my life that I feel hostility towards, or I suspect feels hostility towards me?  How will Christ’s sacrifice for me shape my prayer for them? (Pray for them now)
  3. How has the Lord’s discipline shaped my life to this point? 
  4. Where in my life do I hope the Lord continues to discipline me towards holiness and what part do I play in that hope?
