  1. Read 1 Corinthians 1:18-31. How many times is the word wisdom mentioned and what is the key idea of the passage?
  2. How is God’s wisdom revealed in the cross? Why does the gospel message seem foolish to the world?
  3. How does the death of Christ reveal the foolishness of men’s wisdom and the weakness of men’s power?
  4. Why was a crucified Christ a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles?
  5. List/note any example that you can think of across all of scripture that demonstrates God choosing the weak to shame the strong. Why do people find being seen as “weak” so threatening?
  6. What types of things do people like to boast in or about?
  7. How is Jesus our wisdom, righteousness, sanctification and redemption? (Consider Col.2:3, 2 Cor. 5:21, John 17:19 and Rom. 3:24)
  8. How does the sin of pride cause division so easily in the church then and today?

Application:

  1. How has confidence in my own wisdom gotten in the way of finding peace in God’s wisdom and power?
  2. In what ways do I seek glory for myself rather than glory for God? How does seeking self-glorification impact my relationship with God and other people?
  3. How will I glory in the Lord today?
