Exodus 12-14 Bible Study Questions
Chapter 12
- Record each instruction the Lord gave to Moses and Aaron from the first 28 verses of chapter 12.
- How is Christ foreshadowed in the passover story? (For extra help see: John 1:29, Acts 8:32-35, Isaiah 55:7-8, 1 Cor. 5:7, 1 Peter 1:18-20)
- What does yeast typically symbolize throughout the scriptures? (See: Mt. 16:6-12; Mark 8:15; Luke 12:1-2; 1 Corinthians 5:6-8; Galatians 5:7-9)
- Based on what you have learned or understand about yeast, why was Israel not to interact with any person that had consumed any yeast and to remove the yeast from their homes?
- What is hyssop and what was the significance of using hyssop throughout scripture? (See: Leviticus 14:1-7 & 14:33-53, Psalm 51:7, John 19:28-30)
- What were the Israelites to tell their children when the children ask “What does this ceremony mean to you?”
- What happened to those that did not have blood on the top and sides of their doorpost and what does this foreshadow about people not covered by Christ’s blood?

9. Read Genesis 15:13, Acts 7:6 and Galatians 3:17 and then Exodus 12:40. What do you learn about God from this compilation of scriptures?
10. What were the regulations given for the passover meal?
11. How are the passover meal and the Lord’s supper alike? How are they different?
12. Why did God instruct the Israelites to circumcise those who were foreigner’s among them prior to participating in the passover meal? What is the significance of the act of circumcision? (For help see Genesis 17:1-14)
Chapter 13 & 14
- What was the purpose behind the Lord’s command to consecrate every firstborn male?
- Why did God not lead the Israelite people on the shorter route through the Philistine country?
- Considering the path God chose for the Israelites, what realistic expectations should people have when agreeing to let God direct their path?
- Whose bones were taken out of Egypt with the Israelites and how might transporting those bones encourage the people in their exodus?
- What does Joseph’s request demonstrate what he believed to be true about God?
- The people were led by a pillar of fire and cloud. How is the word of God like a pillar leading us today?
- What was God’s reasoning for instructing the Israelites to encamp by the sea?
- How did Pharaoh’s hardened heart once again lead to his own destruction?
- Fear of circumstance (Ex 13:10) led the people of Israel to react in what way and what did Moses call them to “see”?
- In what ways today do people continue to choose slavery over the freedom found only in the Lord?
- What glory did God gain by hardening Pharaoh’s heart once again? Why is this a just action by God?
- What was the response of the Israelites when they saw the Egyptians lying dead on the shore?
- How does passing through the Red Sea and the people putting their trust in God and Moses reflect baptism in Christ today?
Application:
- What has Christ saved me from and what has Christ saved me to?
- LIke the bitter herbs in the passover meal, what has God used in my life to remind me of the slavery I was in before Christ?
- When has God taken me on the “long route” and how did he grow my faith through it?
- What am I looking forward to most when I experience the wonderful exodus that will happen when Christ returns?
