Read Joshua 23-24 & Judges 1-2:5 in it’s entirety.

  1. The nation of Israel was instructed to drive out the Canaanites (and all other pagan people) from the promised land. Why was this an important command to obey? (See: Deut 9:5-6 and 20:17-18)
  2. Why was God not cruel or unjust in commanding Israelites to exterminate the nations of Canaan?
  3. Which false gods were commonly worshipped by the people of Canaan? (Hint: use a Bible dictionary, commentary/resource)
  4. How many times in Judges 1-2:5 do you see the phrase or some iteration of it “failed to drive out the people.”?
  5. What was the result of the people’s failure to obey God’s command?
  6. What is a common interpretation of the identity of the angel of the Lord?
  7. How do we know that the people of Israel were sorrowful over the consequences of their sin and not the sin itself? Why does shallow and temporary sorrow rarely lead to true repentance?

  1. What are the pros and cons of obeying God’s commands for my life?
  2. Where might I be resisting God’s call to obey and why?
  3. God always keeps his covenants. What covenant has God made and been faithful to uphold with me?
  4. How will I praise God for his faithfulness to me today? Where might I need to specifically ask God to help me be faithful as He is faithful today?
