The following discussion questions are over January 12, 2025's sermon by Matt Heerema on The Tithe.

  1. Read 2 Chronicles 31:5-12. What resulted when the nation of Israel faithfully gave “the tenth” as prescribed by the Mosaic Law?
  2. Read Leviticus 27:30-33, and Numbers 18:20-29. This describes the tithe to the Levites. Who was to give it? What was to be given? How much was given? Who was it given to? What were the recipients supposed to do with it?
  3. Read Deuteronomy 14:22-27. This describes the festival tithe. Who was to give it? What was to be given? How much was given? Who was it given to? What were the “recipients” supposed to do with it?
  4. Read Deuteronomy 14:28-29. This describes the charity tithe. What was to be given? Where was it to be given? Who was to benefit from it?
  5. How does the church relate to the regulations of the Old Testament Law? (Hint, read Hebrews 8:13, and 1 Corinthians 9:13-14).
  6. How should the Old Covenant regulations on giving inform our understanding of giving under the New Covenant?
  7. 2 Corinthians 9:7 tells us that we should decide in our heart what to give.What factors should influence that decision?
  8. How have you personally reasoned through the decision to give in the past? What motivates you to give or prevents you from giving? Would you describe your giving as generous and cheerful the way 2 Corinthians 9 commands?
