  1. According to Hebrews 5:1-4, how is a high priest selected and for what reason?
  2. How was a high priest supposed to act towards the people he represented?
  3. Jesus was without sin.  Why did this make him better able to sympathize and provide help for a sinner as compared to the help of one sinner to another?
  4. How does acknowledging, confessing and repenting of our own sin help us in our relationships towards God and other people?
  5. Read Psalm 2 and John 8:54.  How does John and this Psalm give you greater understanding of verse 5?
  6. Read Genesis 14:18-20, Psalm 110, Hebrews 7:1-17. Old Testament priests came from the order of Aaron/Levites, why did Jesus come from the order of Melchizedek? (Hint: think about what Jesus and Melchizedek held in common)
  7. What do we learn about how Jesus spent his life on earth from 5:7-8?
  8. What does the phrase “he learned obedience from what he suffered” mean?  How was Jesus “made perfect” through his suffering?

  1. Read 1 Peter 2:4-10 & Roman 12:1.  How does God call me to live as part of royal priesthood and in what ways am I living that out?  In what areas do I need God’s help to obey?
  2. In what ways has God allowed suffering in my life to lovingly teach me obedience?
  3. What are ways I can praise Jesus for being my high priest?
