Hebrews Chapter 6:13-30

  1. Reach verses 13-20. List/highlight the repeated words/phrases that you notice in these 7 verses.
  2. Read Genesis 22:15-18.  What promise did God make to Abraham and what was the ultimate fulfillment of that promise?
  3. Take a moment to recall and record Abraham’s failures and sins throughout his lifetime.  Why did he still obtain God’s promise?
  4. What is the difference between a promise and an oath and why did God give both?
  5. Read Numbers 35:9-15 and Joshua 20:1-9.  What was the purpose of a city of refuge?  Where are people today to find refuge and how does this refuge give us encouragement to seize the hope set before us?
  6. What are the purposes of an anchor for a ship?  How is an anchor for the soul (spiritual anchor) similar and yet also different from an earthly/material anchor?
  7. Why is Jesus the only high priest in the Bible that is described as a “forerunner”?  (Hint: What does a “forerunner” do?)
  8. What attributes of God are proclaimed in Hebrews 6:13-20?

  1. From what line of genealogy were priests usually selected?  Which line was Jesus from?
  2. What does it mean for Jesus to be in the order of Melchizedek?
  3. How is Jesus both a king and a priest? 
  4. Use a bible dictionary, commentary or other resource.  What is the meaning of the name Melchizedek?
  5. How does true peace and true righteousness relate to one another?
  6. How is Melchizedek a typology of Christ?
  7. Why is the covenant given by Jesus a new and better covenant?

Application:

1. What comfort do I find in understanding that God’s promises depend not on my abilities, but on God’s faithfulness?  How does this impact my desire to wait and endure patiently like Abraham?

2. What am I tempted to put my hope in outside of Jesus and why will I never truly find security in those things?
3. What do I find the most encouraging in Hebrews 6:13-7?
